National Parks

We will try to visit all the major national parks. So far we've visited 37 out of 59 parks (full list of 59 national parks). 

 National parks differ from national monuments, seashores, historical parks, military parks, etc because their declaration requires an act of congress. Twenty-seven states have national parks, plus American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands. California has the most (9), followed by Alaska (8) and we think that the 5 parks in Utah are the most spectacular. 

 I was surprised to learn that the most-visited national park by far is Great Smoky Mountains (over 9 million visitors in 2011) followed by the Grand Canyon with only about 4 million.
